Data Migration Concept
The concrete Data Migration Project runs in the following phases:
Before
Plan & Preparation is the onboarding of people and planning to the date and time for the detailed activitied until cutover. Given the complexity and size, that plan can go from 2 month until 18 month. In this phase, the data cleansing in source system is initiated.
During
Fit Analysis is the mapping of that As Is data usage in the source against the Target usage.
Design and Build: Based on the input from the Fit Analysis
Test Load – Unit Test – Internal Data Migraion Team test
Test Load – Integration (User Involvement)
Test Load – UAT (User Acceptance Test)
Cutover: Final Load
Post Go-Live: Data support to the operating organization
In the figure above, important activities during the project is highlighted. Two activities is very complicated, Data Cleansing and Data Validation. This is where Simple-R can help you. Designing and executing these activities requires much more than the IT tool and coding skills to integrate and Load data from A to B.
If cleansing and Validation is not done properly, a lot of fail happens in the load and data never get loaded and, another case, a lot of bad data is loaded.
ETL
The figure below illustrated the ETL theory. This is very high level. In the following, we will dive into the complexity and display how we can help you.
The ETL is is not just some simple procedure. A migration is not always ETL. It can have other elements but are typically designed in three step. Each step must be carefully design and migration. Below are the main methods.
In the classic ETL, you in the Migration Team does the Export. However, in some situation other are doing the export, because you are not allowed access. Then you use the ITL method. In other situations, data needed for the Target is not in the Source. Data must then by a functional team be created.
Power BI has been the main tool used to display Cleansing and Validation Report. Any tool that works on top of SQL Views can be used.
Historically we have experience in utilizing SQL in connection to SAP BODS. Another integration tool can also be used.
We have expertise in guiding Integration developers in the migration design. The architecture must follow a certain model in order to do the proper tests.
The staging tables in the ETL, will be used for testing the data in the phases.
